10 Songs From Summer 2019 So Far for Your Workout Playlist

By Uloop Writer on July 22, 2019

Consistently working out can be a difficult and monotonous task but making a workout playlist can help. Listening to music is not only a great way to entertain yourself through fitness routines, but it can also add an extra level of energy and intensity to your performance. Music also focuses you in on your workout by eliminating any surrounding chitter-chatter or distracting noises.

Scientific American has also found that listening to music in the gym leads to more effective and beneficiary workouts. For all of these reasons, a workout playlist layered with tracks that get your adrenaline pumping will help you on your journey to becoming a beast in the gym.

As a result of hip hop being the most active and dominant genre in music, along with its upbeat tempo and aggression, every song on this list is hip hop. Although I need to be better about hitting the gym myself, here are ten tracks from summer 2019 so far that will get you ready for action. Some tracks may not be for everyone, but maybe you’ll find a few gems that you like. Get ready for some banging beats, gym rats!

10. Above Average (feat. G-Herbo) – Valee

The ironic combination of Valee’s whispered bars and an absolutely quaking bass make for a furious jam. G-Herbo and the 30-year-old G.O.O.D. Music rapper complement each other well with their distinct deliveries and thrive in keeping the energy up as they playfully rap bar-for-bar with each other in the third verse. “Above Average” is a terrific banger to slam deadlifts to but I do admit its subject matter is far from anything inspirational. However, the duo’s pompous claims and blusters roll nicely over the track’s thunderous instrumental.

9. Intro (feat. 1TakeJay) – Mustard

1TakeJay is a rapper who employs offbeat flows, which has been revamped in mainstream hip-hop thanks to artists like Blueface and SOB x RBE. 1TakeJay especially thrives with the offbeat style as a result of his animated voice, aggression and hilarious one-liners. Mustard layers the introductory track to his album “Perfect Ten” with a wacky vocal sample that pops sharply off of the track’s jumping bass-line. 1TakeJay devours the beat and it flows into another high energy track in “Pure Water” by Mustard & Migos as the second track on “Perfect Ten.”

8. Style Ain’t Free (feat. Offset) – Moneybagg Yo

This track may be the most aggressive and unapologetic songs on this list. Moneybagg Yo slides over groundbreaking bass that is pleasantly accented with funky synths. Originating from Memphis, TN, Moneybagg has a deep-voiced delivery that propels his hulk-like flows. Offset surely delivers on his feature with a quick-tongued strew of bars. The song runs at lightning speed and ends quickly, but brings a level of explosiveness that could spark you into that final rep. However, Moneybagg Yo’s coarseness, which floods his verses and hooks, may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

7. Outer Space – Big K.R.I.T.

Big K.R.I.T. brings more of a clean-cut style to his music, weaving his work with self-reflection, societal observations and flavorful wordplay. He isn’t overly coarse and he isn’t all in your face, so to speak. On “Outer Space” K.R.I.T. takes on a space theme and lyrically disects his current situation and tries to discover an escape from complacency. For instance, in the second verse K.R.I.T raps, “I-I-I-I remember all I ever wanted was a jetpack / So I could go farther in the hood / That I would live at / ‘Stead of playing cops and robbers / Probably should’ve astronauts / Might’ve seen another planet / But we shooting pocket rockets.”

Although this may not be the most adrenaline-pulsing track on this list, it does offer a smooth rhythm coupled with futuristic synths and background noises. The bass on “Outer Space” also offers pleasant crescendos that can push you through that tough set. “Outer Space” can also provide some relief in the otherwise aggressive playlist you may have. A balance between explosiveness and smooth jams makes for a better workout playlist.

6. Rubberband (feat. Joey Bada$$ & Flatbush Zombies) – Beast Coast

Confidence is key; I think that was the message Joey Bada$$ and Flatbush Zombies tried to get across on this track. Flatbush Zombie member Meechy Darko surely delivers on his fiery verse with his creature-like voice and multiplex flows. Erik Arc Elliot’s creativity shines on the production of the track with vivid background effects that enhance the supergroup’s stout bars. The chorus also includes a nice chant of perseverance as it goes, “I’m a rubber band man, so I always bounce back (Back),” while the bass erupts.

5. Down Bad (feat. JID, Bas, J. Cole, EARTHGANG & Young Nudy) – Dreamville

Similar to the preceding track, “Down Bad” exudes the mentality of bouncing back. The track’s animated instrumental rides lightning fast and the involved lyricists chiefly pick it apart with strong writing (minus Young Nudy). JID contributes a quick and effective chorus that effectively interludes several strong verses. The rappers preach persistence and motivation at swift cadences with plenty of whimsical one-liners mixed in. The overall message and theme of overcoming your obstacles that “Down Bad” reflects is also effective noise for a workout.

4. No Guidance (feat. Drake) – Chris Brown

Here is a bubbly and smooth jam to provide some relief in the otherwise intense playlist I have put together. In addition, this track is probably the most high-profile, popular track on the list, but I feel like some people haven’t given it an adequate chance. If you didn’t give “No Guidance” a chance because you thought it would be soft, you made a mistake. Chris Brown’s single has a dense and alluring beat that dazzles with heavy bass and lucid background vocal samples. Drake and Brown also murder the track as vocalists with smooth deliveries. “No Guidance” would be a fantastic song for running or lifting and raises the energy, mood and vibes of its listener.

3. Zulu Screams (feat. Maleek Berry & Bibi Bourelly) – GoldLink

GoldLink spits quick-paced bars through a bouncy, futuristic instrumental on “Zulu Screams.” A mix of mind-bending synths, tribal percussion strikes and its wavy baseline make for infectious ear candy. GoldLink’s flow is finely attuned with the track, and Malek Berry and Bibi Bourelly’s appearances on the track are brief but pleasant. “Zulu Screams” is layered with immense sonic climaxes that can effectively act as switches into beast mode for any athlete. GoldLink’s newest project, “Diaspora” has faced very favorable reviews and is looking like some of the 26-year-old’s best work to date.

2. Black Balloons Reprise (feat. Denzel Curry) – Flying Lotus

Flying Lotus created a dark and murky atmosphere with this track but gapes the speakers with force. Denzel’s passion is potent as the lead vocalist with gut-wrenching observations and angry bars. There are devilishly clever lines sprinkled here and there and the rap superhero bombards our ears with savage energy. The track isn’t overly thunderous in terms of bass but its sentiment and assortment of sounds allow “Black Balloons Reprise” to hit your spine at a high level.  Curry’s newest solo project “ZUU” is layered with several songs that are similarly fueled with energy that could push you in the gym. However, “ZUU” was released too deep in the spring for me to include it on this list.

1. Giannis (feat. Anderson .Paak) – Freddie Gibbs & Madlib

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib’s album “Bandana” may be the most wholesome hip hop project we’ve seen so far this summer, and “Giannis” is a fantastic, core track to the rapper/producer duo’s authoritative project. Gibbs, per usual, contributes vigorous bars with astounding flows that finely slide through Madlib’s dynamic instrumental. The bars on “Giannis” are ripe with engaging lyrics and Madlib masterfully journeys through different levels and rhythms with utmost precision. Anderson .Paak’s chorus is a tremendous strength to the track and his verse is also spiked with amusing flows. “Giannis” is surely a track that can get you hyped.
