Fashion Trends That Will Soon Be Gone

By Kristen Peuvion on September 8, 2014

Crocs, popped collars, Kanye shades, matching two piece velour tracksuits. What do all of these things have in common? They are all trends that came and went faster than you can imagine, and thank goodness!

Looking back on them now, you’re either thankful you never purchased these awful items, or you’re sheepishly trying to hide because you know that you were guilty of not only buying these things, but wearing them–proudly, I might add.

Don’t be too hard on yourself though; that’s just the way fashion goes. Trends are in style one day and out of style the next. Those few items were just a few of the once “fashionable” and “cool” trends that there are.

Every year there are more trends that will likely follow in the footsteps of Crocs and Kanye shades. Here’s a look at some current trends that will probably not be lasting very long.

Kimonos

These Asian-inspired frocks were a big hit this summer. Their lightweight, minimalistic style made them a great addition to basically any outfit. Kimonos will give your look a boho chic style that can be dressed up or dressed down. But do they have what it takes to become a staple?

Probably not. They’re cute and all, but offer little practicality once summer is gone.

Kimonos are great for the summer because they are so lightweight, but they don’t really make sense for the fall. They offer no warmth which won’t be good for when the weather starts getting cooler.

Granted, they could be layered for the fall, but something tells me once you can’t wear your cute rompers, high-waisted cut-offs and dresses for the summer, your kimonos will head to the back of your closet.

Birkenstocks

These throwback sandals have made a HUGE comeback in the past few months. They are the sandal version of the clunky clogs you used to wear in middle school. While they may be “trendy” right now, who wants their footwear to be described as clunky?

The draw is definitely there, though. After all, they’re great for any casual outfit. Also now that they are so trendy, you can find these sandals in basically any color you’re looking for.

However, these sandals don’t look chic, and unless you’re going for a look that says you’re about to take a walk through the mountains, these shoes should not be your go to.

Solely go for these shoes if you’re looking for some trendy footwear; if you’re looking for a pair of shoes to stand the test of time, Birkenstock sandals are not the shoes for you.

Skorts

This shorts-skirt combination really confuses me. Skirt in the front, shorts in the back? Why not just pick one?! Nonetheless, this trend was extremely popular among college girls for the past few months, but don’t think it will be around for much longer.

This trend seems very similar to the high-low trend we saw in the past few years. Short in the front, long in the back. Once again, why not just pick one?!

It seems people want to have the best of both worlds with these latest fashion trends, but as we saw with the high-low skirt trend, I think the skort trend will be in for a year or so and then fizzle out. So wear them while they’re hot, ladies.

Ombre Hair

Ombre hair has been around for a bit of time now, but I think its time may be running out soon.

Yes, it looks great on people, and it’s fun to do something completely different to your hair, but this hair trend is just so overdone. I think it’s only a matter of time before people begin opting for a single hair color rather than having your hair slowly get lighter and lighter as you go away from your roots.

Crop Tops

I hate to say this one, mostly because I’m a big fan of wearing them, but I think crop tops are well on their way to becoming extinct.

I’m sorry, ladies, I know this is a big staple in your wardrobes, but just like ombre hair, this trend has become way too overdone. If you look at girls when they go out, I can guarantee that at the very least, 60 percent of girls are probably wearing a crop top. It’s a trend that has become too popular and soon crop tops will be replaced by a new trend.

Don’t be too hard on yourself if you wear some of these; everyone can probably admit to wearing or having one of these pieces in their wardrobes, even me.

That is the way trends go–in one minute and out the next–but to avoid spending your money on things that won’t last, no matter how great they may be, invest in pieces that are timeless. They’ll last you a lifetime and won’t have you cringing months later when they are no longer in style.
